Chapter 2

Their time was up. Ezra told his parents he wouldn’t be long and he had to get back home for dinner. Abby hated not being his only focus and found herself jealous of the relationship he had with his parents.

“See you here again tomorrow, same time,” Abby called out to Ezra as he went off on his bicycle. Abby was going in the other direction in her car. They were poles apart in personality and in life.

Abby’s words were playing on Ezra’s mind. He was getting pressure from his parents to make a commitment to the Amish community. He knew he had to make a decision. He was twenty-three now and he had to make a stand and be counted somewhere. But it wasn’t as easy for him, as apparently Abby and his parents seemed to think. He couldn’t see Abby again if he became Amish but then he’d lose his familye and friends if he became Mennonite.

He had to admit he liked the freedom of the Mennonites but Ezra was quite a steady young mann and really trinkets, driving cars, and wearing trendy clothes were not valid enough reasons to give up all he had. On the other hand, the simplicity of the Amish lifestyle allowed its followers to focus on Gotte and what He provided for them. Their needs were basic. And weren’t the Englisch encouraging a back to basics living in terms of foods and all this mindfulness craze? These were inherent in Amish living.

But it had taken him so long to develop his friendships that if he left the community, he really would only have Abby. He’d be dependent on her. Here, at least, there was a comfort in knowing those around him. As he opened the door of his home, he could smell the stew his mother was making and he said to himself “I’d never smell or taste this again.” He loved her stews. How could he ever leave? It saddened him to think he had doubt about staying.

“Mamm, Daed, I’m back. Dinner smells gut.”

“Ezra, danke, I’ve made shoofly pie for dessert.” His mother came out of their living room to greet him but she wasn’t her usual relaxed self.

“Mamm, what’s wrong? You don’t look well.”

His mother reached her hand up to his face and stroked it.

“Please, Ezra, come into the living room. Your father and I need to talk to you.” Now he was worried. Her voice sounded fearful.

As they walking into the living room, Ezra could see a mann with a white beard sitting near his father.

“Hello,” Ezra said.

“Ezra, this is Joe Albrecht. He is from Holmes County, Ohio. This is Ezra, Joe.” His father introduced them.

“A fine young mann, hello Ezra.” Joe shook hands with Ezra but Ezra was still perplexed. As far as he knew, they didn’t know anyone in Holmes County, although then he remembered one of his cousins was married in Ohio.

His father spoke, “Ezra, please sit down. Your mother and I are worried about you. We have asked Joe to take you back to his dairy farm in Holmes County.
